What is Chiropractic?

Understanding chiropractic

Chiropractors are allied health professionals who may be able to assist in the treatment of neck and back pain.Chiropractic treatments focus on manipulating the spine, joints and soft tissues in order to get to the source of your pain.

In addition to addressing the underlying cause of your pain, chiropractors aim to improve your movement and function.

Like osteopaths, chiropractors are holistic health professionals. To make a diagnosis, chiropractorsconsideryour overall health and wellbeing as well as the specific areas causing you pain or discomfort.

A chiropractor will also help you understand how you can improve your health and manage your pain with exercise and other complementary therapies.

Chiropractors believe thatthe spine and overall health are related in a fundamental way.At Path To Health, our chiropractors will consider the health of your spine and its connection to your body and brain. Our sessions include chiropractic care as well as lifestyle modifications to assistyour symptoms so you cantake control of your health and wellbeing.

In Australia, chiropractors are registered health professionals. Chiropractors must have completed an approved and accredited undergraduate degreeor have undertaken a Bachelor’s degree followed by a post-graduate Masters.

Chiropractors must be registered with the Chiropractic Board of Australia, and meet the Board's registration standards, in order to practise in Australia.

You may be able to claim your chiropractic appointments through your private health insurer if you have extras cover. Phone your insurer to discuss what is covered in your plan. Medicare does not cover chiropractic treatment unless you are under a Chronic Disease Management plan which must be organised through your GP.

Chiropractic care can be recommended in conjunction with other health professionals and treatments. Sometimes, your general practitioner may suggest anchiropractic appointment. Or, you may receive a referral from another type of allied health professional, such as an osteopath or physiotherapist.

A typical session with a Chiropractor?

Your first chiropractor appointment will involve detailed questioning about your symptoms, pain, medications and current state of health.

Your chiropractor will ask you about the location of your pain and any activities or movements that make the pain feel better or worse.

Your chiropractor will then aim to identify the cause of your pain and develop a tailored treatment program for you.

Your treatment program will include:

Specific chiropractic treatment, such as manipulation.

Exercises to do at home, including stretching and movements.

Lifestyle modifications, considering your diet, sleeping patterns and any stressors.

Repeat appointments , if necessary.

At Path To Health, we aim to assist in managing your symptoms as quickly as possible and give you tools and resources to empower you to manage your health at home.

What is the difference between Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy?

When you have pain or muscle soreness, or a health concern related to exercise and movement, it can be confusing to know which health professional can best help you.

Chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists are the most common types of health professionals who can help you with pain, exercise and injury-related concerns.

Physiotherapist – symptoms related to exercise and movement.

Osteopath – musculoskeletal symptoms such as muscles and joint pain.

Chiropractor – neuromuscular symptoms such as neck and back pain.

If you’re not sure whether a chiropractor is the most suitable health professional for your symptoms, contact us for specific advice.
